1. What is your name and what do you do?

My name is Stylianos Kampakis and I am a data scientist and a statistician.

2. How long have you been freelancing and why did you decide to become a freelancer?

I have been freelancing part-time for 5 years. I like working on different projects and doing it in my own time. I find it very rewarding.

 3. How would you describe your clients or ideal market?

I can take up pretty much any problem. What many people don’t realize is that the tools and methods can be applied to anything. The domain is irrelevant to me. It could be finance, medicine, sports, recommender systems or anything. What matters is a good relationship with the client and a well-defined goal.

4. Why do you think your customers choose you over your competitors?

I have one of the broadest and most complete background out there. I have a PhD in Machine Learning, 2 MSc degrees in AI, a degree in Statistics, and over 5+ years of experience in the field, working on a huge variety of projects.

I am also very good in communicating and structuring projects. This must have played a role in the early talks.

5. Is being a freelancer what you expected?

It has its ups and downs. What I didn’t expect was the amount of time required to sell and get new projects. This is why companies like Brainbroker make it so much easier for us.

6. What application, website or tool could you not do your job without, and why?

Hm, that’s an interesting question. I am mainly using R and Python, but I could always go to using something else (e.g. Matlab) if the need arises. I am not sure I have one tool I can’t do without.

7. What advice would you give to anyone who wants to become a freelancer within your area?

Be patient. Data science is not easy to grasp for people without the appropriate background. So, when you are talking to prospect clients you need to be able to explain things clearly to them to win them over.

8. What are the most notable things you have learnt since starting your business; either about running a business or about yourself?

Being a freelancer quite often means that you spend more than 50% of your time communicating and explaining results, instead of doing actual work.

9. What is it about being a freelancer that you most enjoy?

The freedom it provides and the fact that I can work on multiple things at once. This keeps things more interesting, but it also helps me grow as a data scientist.

10. What is your ultimate professional goal?

To start my own consultancy providing data science services.
