1. What is your name and what do you do?

Hi, my name is Miro Kirov and I’m a UX/UI Designer, who also codes.

2. How long have you been freelancing and why did you decide to become a freelancer?

My obsession with websites started way back in my childhood years, when I was 14years old. From that moment on I’ve always known what I want to do for a living. I’ve been freelancing professionally on and off from around 7 years. Why? Because it rocks.

3. What support did you have from family and friends? Did anyone advise you against becoming freelance?

My mom is a mathematician, so until I started making real money she always thought that design is a hobby and not a real job. Friends were more supportive.

4. How would you describe your clients or ideal market?

An ideal client would be a partner. When starting a project it’s important to understand that we’re in this together and the best product results we can get are only due to the combining of our mutual brain power, knowledge and diverse background.
Generally I love all areas, which value good design. But I really like working in Healthcare as I see my work’s real-live application in the lives of people in need.

5. Why do you think your customers choose you over your competitors?

Because I’m the best. 🙂

But seriously – I have a tendency to think outside of the box, I’m opened to different opinions/ideas and I have a pretty strong balance between creative and analytical thinking.

6. Is being a freelancer what you expected?

Yes, even better.

7. What application, website or tool could you not do your job without, and why?

Sketch App & Invision.

Such a great combo it’s hard to say no to – creating perfect application designs in Sketch using their native Symbols tools is amazing and also mimics the way the code is structured later on. And Invision is a great tool to organize and prototype different screens, so the website/application flows are easy to understand and test with real users.

8. What advice would you give to anyone who wants to become a freelancer within your area?

Love your job. Never quit. Do more.

9. What are the most notable things you have learnt since starting your business; either about running a business or about yourself?

My biggest surprise about it was that I genuinely liked working with clients. When I started I was scared from thousands of horror stories about “evil” clients I read all over the internet.

But the truth is that it’s all about communication and everything can be settled with a good discussion. 99% of clients are good people, the other 1% are just misunderstood.

10. What is it about being a freelancer that you most enjoy?

Managing my own schedule. Working whenever I feel like it. For a creative person that’s an bliss.

11. What is your ultimate professional goal?

Get better in everything I do, meet more clients and work on bigger projects.

12. What one thing do you wish you had known before you became a freelancer?

How much time is involved in communication and how diverse the projects will be.
Certainly comes as surprise when you start off freelancing.
